Jack is Back!

I was just delighted to learn from Britney Fullgraf (pet parent to Jack the Birthday Boy), has hit the big time! Last week Britney needed a 4th print to complete her entry in the Professional Photographers of Mid-Florida Salon competition, so she decided to make a quick portrait of Jack. Her effort paid off when the portrait won First Place in the Pet Portrait category . . . and imagine her delight when, in the final judging, the print was named Best of Show! Congratulations to Britney and Jack!

Yes, We Do Shoot Horses. . .

. . . but only with the camera, of course. Here are a few of my favorite images from a session we did with Alisa and her feisty pony Teddy, just before the duo left for college, where Alisa will continue to ride Teddy in dressage competitions. We did both formal and casual portraits of Alisa and Teddy, and we even managed to to fit in a family portrait as well.

While Alisa was going through the lengthy process of getting herself and Teddy ready for the dressage portraits, I asked if it would be O.K. to document the fascinating preparations. I was really pleased with the composite that resulted. It was a really enjoyable session!

Only in California . . .

A friend sent this video to me with this explanation: This is a video of a homeless man in Santa Barbara and his pets. They work State Street every week for donations.  The animals are pretty well fed and are mellow. They are a family. The man who owns them rigged a harness up for his cat so she wouldn't have to walk so much (like the dog and himself).  At some juncture the rat came along, and as no one wanted to eat anyone else, the rat started riding with the cat and, often, on the cat! The dog, will stand all day and let you talk to him and admire him for a few chin scratches. Amazing!

Happy Birthday to Jack!

A photographer friend, Britney Fullgraf, from Lakeland, Florida, sent me pictures from the gala party she held for her dog Jack. I thought the clever details should be shared with dog lovers, as they might inspire similar celebrations. If my three dogs only knew . . .

I especially loved the darling invitation in which Jack was Photoshopped into the famous C.M. Coolidge "A Friend in Need" painting. Really cute!

The decorations and nibbles were festive.

The cupcakes looked delicious.

The guest of honor was ready for the fun.

The favors were appealing.

The piñata was fun and full of dog treats.

All in all it was a great day for the birthday boy!

Simon said, "Jack HAS GOT to see this. Look Jack, you're famous!!" Was a great party. Would be SO fun to have his portrait made at Persnickety. I feel a trip to Annville coming on!! =)

An Important Warning . . .

If you are a dog lover who spends any amount of time on the Internet, you might have already seen the warning about the danger of “one hole” rubber balls, that are such popular “fetch” balls. If you haven’t please read The Chai Story, which was posted by Chai’s owner on a Blogspot entry. It tells the horrifying tale of what happened to Chai, a 10-year-old lab-mix, who was severely injured when his tongue was sucked into the interior hole of a rubber ball that he had chewed through into the hole. The ball’s design created, in effect, a vacuum action that trapped the dog’s tongue. The image below shows the ball, after it was surgically removed from Chai’s mouth because his tongue became so swollen, that it could not be removed without anesthesia. After tremendous suffering, and $5,000 worth of medical care, the poor Chai’s tongue had to be amputated because the ball had cut off blood flow for too long a time.

Chai’s owner has not had much luck getting the attention of the company that manufacture the poorly designed ball. The toy, which was manufactured by Four Paws Inc, is called “Pimple Ball with Bell (Item #20227=001, UPC Code 0 4566320117 9). Chances are good that other similar balls might be on the market as well, so please check your dog toys and protect your pet from such a terrible injury. And read the blog item to learn more about Chai’s ordeal and about other dogs who were injured by this toy.

Welcome!

Puppy Love

I recently received an email from one of my photographer friends who just adopted two darling puppies. Meet Carol the adorable Sammie and Sallie. Is there anything cuter than westie puppies! They are so much fun to photograph. My Murphy lived to be 18 years old, and he absolutely took directions from me when I photographed him. In fact he was much easier to photograph than most people! Most westies are; just look at this well-behaved family . . .
